The President of the United States (USA), Joe Biden, will not impose a ban on TikTok. He will leave the fate of the social network to the newly elected head of the White House, Donald Trump.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Associated Press (AP).
As the publication reminds us, last year Congress, in a law signed by Biden, required TikTok's parent company ByteDance to sell the company by January 19, the day before Trump's inauguration. However, according to an unnamed official, the administration of the current head of the White House will leave the decision on the ban to Trump.
"Trump, who once called for the app to be banned, has since promised to keep it available in the USA, although his transition team has not indicated how they plan to achieve this," AP writes.
Meanwhile, future National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated that the federal law that could ban the social network also allows for an extension if "a viable deal is on the table."
According to Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, he spoke with Biden and urged him to extend the ban on the social network, as more time is needed to find an American buyer and avoid disrupting the lives of millions of Americans.
This Wednesday, Democrats attempted to pass a law that would delay the ban, but it was blocked.
In April 2024, Biden signed a law that allows for a ban on TikTok in the USA. According to the document, ByteDance had 270 days to sell the social network to an American company; otherwise, the social network would face a ban in US app stores and in the "internet hostings" that support it.
In particular, in December, the Federal Appeals Court upheld the aforementioned law.
