The United States of America (USA) is opposed to the future joint statement of the "Group of Seven" (G7) containing a "pro-Ukrainian tone."
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing New York Times (NYT).
According to one senior official, Canada, which has taken the lead in drafting the statement, circulated the first draft among the other six member countries. The document still retains the pro-Ukrainian tone that was present in previous years. However, as early as this week, the American side urged a revision of the statement to remove references to:
Currently, diplomats are working on phrasing that describes the "devastating war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine."
As noted by another senior official, the preparation of the text and negotiations may continue until Monday, after which the draft must be published.
It remains unknown whether G7 leaders will invite President Volodymyr Zelensky to a virtual meeting.
Another official mentioned that the Americans also wanted to shorten passages that describe the invasion as a violation of sovereignty.
Today, the draft statement indicates that strong security guarantees and Ukraine's integration into the European Union (EU) "will be crucial for ensuring lasting peace that prevents future aggression."
Additionally, according to the Financial Times, Washington is also against referring to the Russian Federation (RF) as an aggressor in the G7 statement.
