On the evening of Saturday, January 18, the social network TikTok was removed from the app stores of Apple and Google for users in the United States. This occurred just before a law banning the platform was set to take effect.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Associated Press.

As of 10:50 PM Eastern Time, the app had disappeared from the Apple and Google stores due to the law prohibiting the social network. The law also required TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, which is based in China, to sell the platform. Otherwise, the app would face a ban, which ultimately happened.

Now, when users tried to open TikTok, a pop-up appeared that prevented them from scrolling through videos.

"Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable. A law has been enacted in the U.S. banning TikTok. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use TikTok at this time. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office. Please stay with us," the message stated.

Prior to this notification, the company informed users that its service would be "temporarily unavailable," stating that it was working to restore its service in the U.S. "as soon as possible."

It is worth noting that yesterday, elected U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would likely grant TikTok a 90-day reprieve from the ban in the country. However, this will happen tomorrow, after the inauguration, if he makes such a decision.
