Recently elected U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had a phone conversation. This took place on Friday, January 17.

According to RBK-Ukraine, this information comes from the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

"Chinese leader Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Friday," the publication states.

However, further details of the conversation between Trump and Xi Jinping have not been disclosed yet.

Trump Confirms Conversation with Xi Jinping

On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump confirmed the phone call with the Chinese leader. According to the U.S. president-elect, they discussed the TikTok ban, trade, and efforts to achieve peace.

"I just spoke with Chinese head Xi Jinping. The call was very good for both China and the U.S. I hope we can resolve many issues together, starting immediately. We discussed balanced trade, fentanyl, TikTok, and many other topics. President Xi and I will do our utmost to make the world more peaceful and secure," Trump wrote.

Let us remind you that Donald Trump's team invited Xi Jinping to his inauguration, which will take place on January 20. Western media point out that this was a significant move, as, according to American tradition, world leaders are not invited to presidential inaugurations.

However, the Chinese leader declined the invitation. As is known, China will send Vice President Han Zheng to Trump's inauguration.

Politico reports that this move may disappoint the new U.S. president's team, as Han Zheng holds a symbolic role in China. Meanwhile, a visit from the foreign minister would have been more significant, as the parties could have conducted initial negotiations.

U.S.-China Relations

It is worth noting that the relationship between the U.S. and China is quite tense, driven by economic competition. Additionally, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that the U.S. trades with Taiwan, which China considers its territory.

During his first presidency, Donald Trump criticized trade relations with China. After winning the election in November 2024, he announced plans to impose tariffs on goods imported to the U.S. from China.

Trump also mentioned that he communicated with the Chinese leader through representatives. According to him, he will be able to find common ground with Xi Jinping.
