A new potential underwater cable break has been discovered in the Baltic Sea. The damage reportedly occurred to an electrical cable laid between Finland and Germany.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing Yle and Reuters.

What is known about the cable damage

According to Finnish media, the cable broke in the Baltic Sea near the island of Gotland. The Swedish Coast Guard has confirmed this information. The probable cable break occurred in Sweden's exclusive economic zone.

The Prime Minister of Sweden stated on social media platform X that he is aware of the issue. He mentioned that "information regarding potential damages is taken very seriously."

The Coast Guard has indicated that it is still unclear when exactly the probable cable break occurred. However, authorities were informed of the incident yesterday.

It is reported that the underwater cable C-Lion1, operated by Cinia Oy, likely sustained the damage.

Investigation of the incident

Reuters reports that the Swedish Coast Guard is already investigating the possible damage to the underwater cable off the southwestern coast of the country in the Baltic Sea.

"We received information about a suspicious cable damage, and the prosecutor's office decided to initiate a preliminary investigation," Reuters quotes a representative of the Coast Guard.

The Swedish prosecutor's office has also begun a preliminary investigation into the incident.

Damage to underwater cables

The C-Lion1 cable was commissioned in 2016. This same cable last broke in November. It is the only Finnish underwater cable that directly connects Finland with Central Europe.

At that time, another damaged underwater communication cable was discovered in the Baltic Sea, linking Lithuania and Sweden.

And in December of last year, news emerged about the damage to the underwater electrical cable Estlink 2, which connects Finland and Estonia. As later reported, Finnish authorities do not rule out the possibility of intentional damage to the underwater power line in the Gulf of Finland, where two vessels were spotted.
