"Starmer to announce new aid for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, dubbed 'Trump's Challenge,' according to media reports."

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to soon announce a new aid package for Ukraine along with sanctions against Russia. This comes despite increasing pressure from Washington on Kyiv to "back down" and accept a peace agreement with Moscow.
"Стармер анонсирует новую помощь Украине и санкции против России, сообщает пресса в рамках 'Вызова Трампу'."

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, is expected to announce a new aid package for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia soon. This will occur despite Washington's increasing pressure on Kyiv to "back down" and accept a peace agreement with Moscow.

This information comes from RBK-Ukraine citing The Telegraph.

According to the British newspaper, on Monday, February 24, marking the third anniversary of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Starmer will unveil a "triple strike" of measures that include military assistance and sanctions.

"This sharply contrasts with Trump’s approach, who in recent days referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a 'dictator' and insists on a swift end to the conflict," the publication states.

The British publication also notes that Starmer will thus "challenge Trump with new aid for Ukraine."

Additionally, British media report that the American president accused London on Friday of "doing nothing" to end the Russo-Ukrainian war.

What Starmer Will Discuss with Trump at the White House

According to The Telegraph, during the planned visit of the British Prime Minister to the U.S. and talks with Trump on Thursday, Starmer may announce a date by which Britain will be able to allocate 2.5% of its GDP for defense. This is likely to be 2030.

The head of the British government will also extend an invitation from the King for a state visit to the United Kingdom to the U.S. President.

However, as The Telegraph writes, Starmer's new aid package for Ukraine "risks disappointing the White House."

What We Know About the "Triple Strike"

British media emphasize that on Monday, the current gap between the positions of the UK and the U.S. regarding the Russo-Ukrainian war will be highlighted. In Whitehall, a package of measures is being developed involving three different government departments to demonstrate London's support for Kyiv.

  • The UK Ministry of Defence is expected to soon reveal new details about its military assistance to Ukraine. One of the ideas being discussed is the provision of additional weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, although the contents of the package have not yet been fully approved.
  • The UK Foreign Office will announce a significant set of sanctions against Russia, which could include up to 1,900 Russian individuals and legal entities connected to the aggression against Ukraine.
  • A source from The Telegraph in the government indicated that the UK Home Office will intensify the fight against Russian "dirty money." Sanctions may target oligarchs supporting Putin.

In Whitehall, the new package of measures is referred to as a "full triple strike," aimed at underscoring London's support for Kyiv.

On Monday, February 24, UK Defence Minister Jon Healey will give an interview to clarify the additional support. It is expected that Foreign Secretary David Lammy will address the House of Commons.

Recall that Politico previously reported on the preparation of a large military aid package from the EU for Ukraine totaling at least 6 billion euros. However, it could increase to as much as 10 billion euros.

On February 21, European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius stated that Ukraine will receive a new package of military aid from the European Union, which will serve as a "powerful signal" of Europe’s support for Ukrainians.

Additionally, according to Bloomberg, the European Union is preparing a military aid package for Ukraine worth 20 billion euros.
