1. Remember landmarks
From the very beginning, pay attention to large objects such as squares, buildings, or rivers. Take photos of them or jot down their names so you can ask for directions if needed.
2. Go back
If you find yourself lost, retrace your steps along the path you have already taken. People intuitively remember the way back, even if they didn't pay much attention to it.
3. Ask locals
Inquire about directions from local residents, but specify major landmarks, like a train station or a square. Show them the written name if there is a language barrier.
4. Use the sun for orientation
In the morning, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If you know where your destination is, determine your direction based on the sun or shadows.
5. Listen to sounds and crowds
In a city, the sounds of cars or the buzz of a crowd will lead you to main streets, while the smell of food will guide you to cafes. In the woods, listen for the sound of water or a highway.
6. Compass or watch
If you have a compass, use it. Without a compass, you can determine directions using a watch: point the hour hand at the sun, and the line between it and the 12 o'clock mark will indicate south.
7. Prepare in advance
Write down your hotel address on paper, set up offline maps, and charge your phone. Being prepared always reduces stress and helps you find solutions.
