The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, has called for a decision to resume the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine at the European Union summit scheduled for March 6. He has threatened to block the summit's conclusions if such a decision is not made. Fico announced this on his Facebook page.
The Prime Minister reiterated that Slovakia will not support Ukraine "either financially or militarily" in the continuation of the war, adding that Kyiv "will never be strong enough to negotiate from a position of military strength."
Fico also made demands regarding the summit's wording, specifically calling for an "immediate ceasefire" regardless of whether a final peace agreement has been reached. He emphasized the importance of including a call to restore gas transit through Ukraine to Slovakia and Western Europe in the summit's conclusions.
"The Slovak Republic demands that there be a clear request at the end to resume the transit of gas through Ukraine to the Slovak Republic and Western Europe. The situation is absurd; gas is not flowing from east to west, but Ukraine is worsening the situation in Europe by taking European gas. This is Russian gas, for which it is paying, financing Russian military supplies. It is impossible to ensure Europe's competitiveness if the supplies of Russian gas through Ukraine are not resumed. The assistance that the EU and the Slovak Republic provide to Ukraine in various forms cannot take the shape of a one-way ticket," Fico stated.
