On his first day in office, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order to review the process of granting citizenship to children born on American soil. This has been reported by the media.
The Trump order, as noted, will prohibit federal agencies from issuing certain documents typically provided to U.S. citizens.
The document applies to children born after 30 days from the date the measures are enacted. It is relevant in cases where the parents are in the U.S. illegally, as well as in situations where the mother is temporarily in the U.S., for instance, on a visa, and the father is not a citizen.
As writes The Hill, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed a lawsuit challenging Trump's order aimed at the process of granting citizenship by birthright for children born in the U.S. to parents who do not reside here legally.
The ACLU's lawsuit, filed in New Hampshire on behalf of clients whose children will not be recognized as citizens under the order, claims that the order violates the 14th Amendment and the Administrative Procedure Act.
