In the Chernihiv region, two men have been arrested for poisoning pensioners and people with disabilities to acquire their homes.

According to the police of the region, they gained the trust of lonely pensioners and individuals with disabilities over several years, transferring their property into their own names before administering a lethal dose of poison to the victims.

"The 44-year-old and 34-year-old residents of Chernihiv sought out individuals in vulnerable situations and persuaded them to drink alcohol together. The fraudsters regularly brought alcoholic beverages to the victims, into which they mixed potent medications and harmful substances (methanol). They convinced the victims to sign power of attorney documents regarding their property, and after obtaining the necessary paperwork, they added a lethal dose of drugs to the alcohol and forced the property owners to consume it," law enforcement officials reported.

Operatives and investigators uncovered the masterminds behind this criminal scheme and prevented the murder of a 66-year-old man who is visually impaired. They have been detained.

During the searches, bottles containing alcoholic substances, potent pills, several passports, and property documents—such as powers of attorney, wills, applications, sales contracts, pension certificates, dozens of bank cards, and mobile phones—were confiscated from the suspects. A rifle and a smoothbore shotgun with ammunition were also found in their possession.

They have been charged with attempted murder by a group for mercenary motives (Part 3 of Article 15, Paragraph 6 of Part 12 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). An investigation is also underway regarding large-scale fraud (Part 4 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The suspects face imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years or life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
